June 2017 // Journeying Together: Session 3 – David the king

Meeting aim: To explore what makes God happy.

Bible passage: 2 Samuel 6

Background: This is a very challenging passage to understand and accept for two quite different reasons. On the one hand, Uzzah is killed for not sticking fastidiously to the rules but on the other David is praised for being extravagant and going outside the accepted normal behaviour. The Bible is complicated - but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t make sense. If we can help our young people to understand that this is a paradox - that both conflicting sentiments are true and ‘right’ in different ways - then we are starting to unlock a ‘spiritual intelligence’ where they no longer read the Bible as a set of ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but can instead critique the stories out of a personal understanding and experience of God’s character. We can help them develop the skills to dig deeper than just a face-value reading of the text. The paradox in this passage is perhaps summed up that there is joy in the ‘fear of the Lord’.
