MEETING GUIDE 1: IDENTIFYING EMOTIONS

Scenario 1 – Nick & Jamie

For Nick’s 12th birthday his parents took him and a friend to Marwell zoo for the day. He was looking forward to seeing the penguins because they were his favourite! Nick’s friend Jamie wanted to spend most of his time at the monkey enclosure. The weather changed and the heavy rain meant they all had to go inside. They waited for the rain to stop but it didn’t so Nick’s parents decided to take them all home early, without seeing the penguins.
- How do you think Nick might have felt throughout the day?

- Did his feelings change as the day went on? If so, how?

After they had finished shopping they decided to get the bus back home. However, Sarah had spent all of the money she took with her, including the bus ticket money from her parents. They were stuck in town alone.

MEETING GUIDE 3: DEPRESSION

Helpful links:

The website youngminds.org.uk is helpful and there is a tab specifically for children and young people. Generally I wouldn’t advise young people to head to the internet first but, instead, chat to a trusted adult. I’d advise any young person to head to their GP, school counsellor, a trusted teacher or youth worker if they have any concerns over their mental health and emotional wellbeing. It is key to not self-diagnose but be aware of any symptoms that may lead to a mental health illness.

For youth workers there is a lot online about depression and helpful websites include:

mind.org.uk

mentalhealth.org.uk

www.time-to-change.org.uk

Again, I would stress that youth workers cannot officially diagnose a mental health illness but they can encourage young people to head to their GP for more information and support.
