How do you recover when a new initiative fails?
Modern Christian culture isn’t generally very good at dealing with failure. We’re well-versed in vision: in proclaiming big dreams that are going to change our community… our nation… the world. We’re less good at talking retrospectively about the things that didn’t quite work out that way after all. If you happen to have an archive of old Youthwork magazines on your shelf, just take a browse through some of the great and apparently God-ordained initiatives of the last two decades that the organisers said were going to change everything: so many have been simply forgotten without trace. When something doesn’t work, we can tend to cartoonishly whistle and tiptoe away.
