I felt God say that I was on a journey. I was represented by the bottom section pointing forward to the future. God was the triangle in front leading me on and pointing down at where I should go. The triangle to my right was Jesus by my side guiding my direction. To my left was the Holy Spirit pointing to the intersection where the ‘Father,’ ‘Jesus’ and I met, and providing another presence and guide for my journey.

What relationship do the three parts of God have for your mentee? Could they describe their various roles in their life over the past week or so? Maybe you could scribble words on each triangle to describe the different ways of understanding each part of God? What does ‘Father’ mean to them in regards to God’s role in their life? When have they encountered the Father? What about the Holy Spirit? When have they encountered him and what does he do?

To me, it appeared a bit like looking up a valley to the vanishing point where new horizons awaited. The top triangle represented the blue sky, beneath my feet the brown path and to my left and right the green valley walls. What is beyond that valley mouth in the distance? What dreams has he placed on their heart, that are, as yet, out of view in the distance? How does each person of the Trinity help them with their dreams?

Remember to ask open questions first and answer with your own knowledge and opinion second.

When I was about 16 an older guy came up to me at the end of church to say he had had a dream where he saw me with my head in the clouds – but my feet on the ground. This image has stayed with me for years, and I think this sums up that image of the valley from the first story quite well. In my own (sometimes rather strange) mind I do my dreaming with the Holy Spirit – big, blue sky thinking; head in the clouds stuff – and then I ask my Father what he’d say about it and we go through the details of what would be needed to make those massive dreams come to life.
