THE IMPACT

Since the Mumfords released Sigh no more in 2009, every Christian and their dog has released a folk-worship album. Here’s some of the band’s most notable impact:

REND COLLECTIVE

Now, to be accurate, Rend were around before Mumford and Sons were even a twinkle in a banjo retailer’s eye, but would they have achieved the same of level of notoriety and impact if Mumford hadn’t blown the doors off the folk scene? The UK’s biggest Christian band certainly ride the crest of the ukulele wave.

OLD DOGS, NEW TRICKS

The Mumford’s impact isn’t limited to up and coming artists. Recent albums from worship legends Stuart Townend and Matt Redman have grabbed the Mumford-family coat tails and joined the folk revolution.

BANJOS EVERYWHERE

Seven years ago, banjos were found pretty much exclusively in the Southern states of America. Now they’ve achieved a kind of omnipresent status, popping up all over the shop – no worship leader is complete without one.

THE LYRICS

Marcus Mumford’s Christian lineage is well-known (his parents are at the forefront of the Vineyard movement) and many of his lyrics seem to be taken straight from sermon notes. Here are some of the best:

‘Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you, it will set you free.’ SIGH NO MORE

‘Awake my soul, for you were made to meet your maker.’ AWAKE MY SOUL

‘Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life.’ WHITE BLANK PAGE

‘It seems that all my bridges have been burned, but you say that’s exactly how this grace thing works. It’s not the long walk home that will change this heart, but the welcome I receive with the restart.’ ROLL AWAY YOUR STONE
